Op-Ed: The Left’s Unease with Free Speech

Do your state and local elected officials support free speech for all on campus?

The First Amendment is under assault in America by the intolerant left. A growing number of younger Americans on our college campuses believe it is appropriate to ban speech that they disagree with, are offended by, or find politically incorrect. It’s a slippery slope that has caused several state legislatures to move legislation aiming to protect speech at state colleges. Liberal leaning politicians as well as administrators and educators at our institutions of higher learning would be wise to speak out against the danger of suppressing free speech in an open society, but I’m not holding my breath.

For the past seven years, I've witnessed up close the left’s disdain for robust free speech rights. Ever since the landmark Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission decision in 2010, the left has engaged in a nationally coordinated effort at all levels of government to "overturn" the Citizens United decision under the guises of "dark money", "corporations taking over the political process", "too much money in politics" or whatever the attack line du jour might be. These disingenuous attacks have systematically failed because overturning Citizens United would come down to limiting the free speech rights that are protected under the 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The liberal attacks on Citizens United have become so falsified that most people don’t even remember - or realize - what the case was about in the first place. When folks hear the case was about limiting political speech and Citizens United’s desire to run advertisements to support a movie we produced, attitudes magically change. After all, even if one believes that there is too much money in the political system, should the government be able to censor a film or book or pamphlet because someone wishes to spend money to let people know that it exists? Reasonable people agree that this type of "big brother" government action has no place in America.

Furthermore, the liberal attacks on Citizens United are steeped in hypocrisy. One of the top priorities of failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was to overturn the Citizens United decision. However, the Democrat nominee for president and Super PACs supporting her candidacy outspent Donald Trump and Republican Super PACs by a two to one margin. If dark money was truly buying our elections, Hillary Clinton would be president right now. But it’s more than just liberals saying one thing and doing another; it’s much worse.

That brings us back to the politics of today and the left’s permanent campaign against President Trump. The anti-free speech movement targeting conservative speakers on college campuses makes me wonder if the anti-Citizens United effort is truly about the amount of money in the politics. If the left was so concerned about the flood of money in the system, wouldn’t they be against labor union money as well? And if corporate money was delivering a favorable message for the liberals, would that suddenly be fine too? If you recall, liberals had no problem with the corporate funded advertisements that ran in support of Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 documentary film.

The left in America today appears not to have a problem with the amount of money in politics, but rather the messenger and the message itself. Hillary Clinton argued that she wanted to overturn Citizens United because of the money it allowed in the political process, but she was also keenly aware that our film before the Supreme Court was entitled Hillary The Movie. "Citizens United was about me" Secretary Clinton used to tell crowds, making it sound as though she was in favor of banning speech that was critical of both her and her political beliefs.

Historically, liberal campuses like the University of California at Berkeley have fancied themselves as bastions of enlightened thinking and peaceful assembly. But these days it appears as though free speech and the right to assemble only deserve constitutional protections for people the left agrees with politically. Our mantra at Citizens United has always been, "we may not agree with what you’re saying, but we believe in your right to say it." This is what conservatives believe in their heart of hearts.

My question is what does the left and their liberal enablers really believe about free speech in America?

Striving For Fraud-Free Elections Shouldn’t Be A Controversial Matter

The words "Government of the people, for the people, by the people" is the essence of what makes America exceptional. Our tradition of allowing our citizens to openly and freely choose our leaders at all levels of government makes us the envy of the world. Voting in America is not only a sacred right, but it's a process that millions of people from around the world yearn to participate in. That being said, our election system has needed constant attention and reform throughout our nation's history and that shouldn't stop now.

Fair and accurate elections are a hallmark of our democratic system of government. But if Americans can't trust the system by which we choose our leaders, trust in government can erode over time. Our elected officials must prioritize voting integrity at all levels of government. The Presidential Coalition wants to support state and local office seekers like Secretaries of State and county elections officials who understand this importance as well. Do you know where candidates in your area stand on election integrity issues?

Our election system needs to be fortified with common sense reforms and a commission led by Vice President Pence is a perfectly appropriate way to review what works, what doesn't, and to recommend suitable reforms. This is not a radical undertaking - not even close! That's why it's disheartening to see so many on the left totally reject the subject of election reform or any kind of review of our election processes. To deny that election fraud of any sort exists is to bury your head in the sand.

Below are several recent headlines from around the country detailing various voter fraud reports, investigations and allegations.

Detroit News: “Records: Too many votes in 37% of Detroit’s precincts"
CNN: “Pennsylvania county probes whether voter forms are legit, on time”
Reuters: “Three in Florida, Virginia charged with voter fraud”
Hawaii News Now: “Voter fraud investigation targets Hawaii County as clerk has voter registration trouble”
ABC15 Arizona: "Voter fraud? Non-citizen can register to vote in Arizona; officials, law enforcement investigating"
CBS4 Denver: "Investigation Finds Dead Voters Casting Ballots In Colorado"
Daily Signal: "Voter Fraud Battles Heat Up in Sudden Swing State of Georgia"
Idaho Statesman: "Idaho man implicated in what may be Washington county’s first voter fraud cases"
Chicago Sun-Times: "Feds, state officials look into Kankakee voter fraud allegations"
Indianapolis Star: "Top Indiana election official alleges more voter fraud"
Cedar Rapids Gazette: "23 convicted of Iowa voter fraud in last 5 years"
ABC NebraskaTV: "Two Lexington men charged with voting fraud"
Albany Times-Union: "In New York, voter fraud tends to be local"
Providence Journal: "Voter rolls off by 189,000 in R.I., Journal analysis finds"
The Tennessean: "42 reports of voter fraud in Tennessee in 2016"
Burlington Free-Press: "VT pauses automatic voter registration after problems"
Wyoming Tribune Eagle: "State flags 27 cases of voter registration fraud in Laramie County"

The Presidential Coalition believes in the following basic principles:

  • We must make sure people who are trying to vote or registering to vote are eligible.
  • We must push for common sense voter identification laws. Are you who you say you are?
  • We must make sure voter rolls are up to date and accurate. Are dead people voting?
  • We must make voting as simple a process as possible without compromising the system.
  • Voting should be encouraged. Low turnout elections are not good for our Democracy.

The bottom line is that voter fraud exists and denying that fact is not a constructive way to approach the issue. We should always be striving to make improvements and reforms to our election system so that it is fair, accountable, streamlined, and accurate for every one of our citizens.

Always remember to thoroughly research candidates and elected officials at all levels of government who oversee our nation’s voting systems. You can make a difference!

State and Local Elected Officials must stand against Sanctuary Cities

Is your city or county a sanctuary jurisdiction or on the verge of becoming one?

You can make a difference by carefully choosing your state and local elected officials!

Ending “sanctuary cities” is not a partisan issue. It’s a coalition of individuals who believe in the rule of law and who know the difference between right and wrong and fair and unfair.

The inflammatory issue of sanctuary cities in the United States has been a growing problem for years. Inaction by our leaders in Washington, D.C. - like with so many other issues – has made the problem worse. Thanks to President Trump the issue is now front and center and deservedly so.

There are now an estimated 300 sanctuary cities or jurisdictions in our country, with the entire state of California now threatening to become our first “sanctuary state.” So-called “sanctuary campuses” are also popping up around the country.

The bottom line is that state and local elected officials who seek to defy federal immigration laws must be held to account and voted out of office because they are jeopardizing public safety. The Presidential Coalition is looking for state and local candidates who will promise to enforce immigrations laws and publicly state their opposition to sanctuary jurisdictions of any kind.

The Presidential Coalition wants to support and grow the “conservative farm team” in America. If you’re an American who is concerned about the sanctuary city problem, find out who your local elected representatives are and where they stand. Who is your mayor? Who is your county executive? Who are your town or city council members? These offices can make consequential decisions on matters of immigration, law enforcement, and taxpayer funds.

It’s time for our elected officials and office seekers to face some tough facts.

The reason this issue has resonated with so many Americans is because it’s a simple matter of fairness and whether or not we are a nation of laws. People understand things that aren’t fair and they are asking logical questions that deserve answers. Why should taxpayer dollars be spent on benefits for illegal immigrants? Why should federal funds be sent to any city, county, or other jurisdiction that refuses to enforce federal immigration laws?

Folks also understand things that just aren’t right. Millions of people live their lives by obeying the law and taking great pride in the rule of law. When they see some laws being enforced for some and not for others, it cuts right to the heart of our system of government and what it stands for. Is justice really blind and are we truly a nation of laws?

Furthermore, a vast majority of Americans work hard and pay taxes on time. Why should their tax dollars be spent on illegal immigrants - great numbers of whom don’t pay taxes themselves?

President Trump’s executive order to defund sanctuary cities will save U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars. Jurisdictions that continue to defy federal law must be held to account. But taking action on sanctuary cities is only the beginning of the reforms that are necessary to get our illegal immigration problem under control. We must also enforce the current laws that are on the books and, of course, build a sturdy wall at our Southern border. If we don’t have borders, we don’t have a country.

If you know of a state or local candidate who is working to end sanctuary cities, please contact the Presidential Coalition today!

The Presidential Coalition Supporting Conservative Ken Cuccinelli For Virginia Governor

The Presidential Coalition, an affiliate of Citizens United, is supporting Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli for Governor of Virginia. The Presidential Coalition has contributed $50,000 to the campaign and will take on an active role as the race progresses this year. The Presidential Coalition has been a long-time supporter of Ken Cuccinelli.

“Terry McAuliffe is far too out of the mainstream with his liberal agenda for the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said David N. Bossie, President of Citizens United. “Terry’s checkered past as a Democrat fundraiser during the scandal plagued Clinton years will only turnoff Virginia voters this November.

“Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli will build on the commonsense policies of Governor Bob McDonnell and continue Virginia on a path towards increased prosperity. During his term as Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli has been a leading advocate for small businesses and has fought the overreach of the Obama Administration when it comes to the government takeover of health care. Virginians needs a governor who will lead by their own virtue not what the Democrat establishment in Washington tells them to do.”

The Presidential Coalition Launches Annual Turkey Drive For Military Families

The Presidential Coalition, an affiliate of Citizens United, has started its annual turkey drive for America’s men and women in uniform. This year, The Presidential Coalition will be providing turkeys to military families at five bases across the country.

“Our men and women in uniform sacrifice so much for our country every day and to help them just a little bit by providing them turkeys for their holiday meals is the least that we can do,” said David N. Bossie, President of Citizens United. “I want to thank all those Americans who are contributing to this effort to provide meals to those who are protecting our freedom.”

If you would like to join this effort, please call 1-800-754-3610.
